Elements and modalities
The twelve signs combine four elements with three modalities. The element describes a broad mode of engagement; the modality describes how a sign begins, sustains or changes a pattern.
| Sign | Element | Modality | Concise orientation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries ♈ | Fire | Cardinal | Initiates directly and tests through action |
| Taurus ♉ | Earth | Fixed | Stabilizes, maintains and develops tangible value |
| Gemini ♊ | Air | Mutable | Connects information and changes perspective |
| Cancer ♋ | Water | Cardinal | Initiates protection, belonging and emotional response |
| Leo ♌ | Fire | Fixed | Sustains creative expression and visible identity |
| Virgo ♍ | Earth | Mutable | Refines, differentiates and improves practical systems |
| Libra ♎ | Air | Cardinal | Initiates comparison, exchange and relationship |
| Scorpio ♏ | Water | Fixed | Sustains depth, privacy and transformative engagement |
| Sagittarius ♐ | Fire | Mutable | Expands through exploration, meaning and synthesis |
| Capricorn ♑ | Earth | Cardinal | Initiates structure, responsibility and long-term effort |
| Aquarius ♒ | Air | Fixed | Sustains systems, principles and group-oriented thought |

Fire, earth, air and water
Fire signs emphasize animation, confidence and directed energy. Earth signs emphasize material conditions, continuity and practical results. Air signs emphasize concepts, communication and relationships between ideas. Water signs emphasize feeling, bonding and receptive awareness.
Every chart contains all four elements through signs on house cusps and planetary placements. Having no displayed planet in an element does not remove that element from life.
Cardinal, fixed and mutable
Cardinal signs begin a season and are associated with initiation. Fixed signs consolidate and sustain. Mutable signs redistribute, adapt and transition. These are not rankings: initiation without continuity stalls, continuity without adaptation hardens, and adaptation without direction scatters.
Reading a sign in a chart
“Mars in Cancer” combines Mars as a function with Cancer as a style. The house shows the field and aspects show relationships. The same sign therefore behaves differently through the Moon, Venus, Saturn or an angle.
In Astro Legacy, a planet row displays the sign, symbol and degree. Use planets for the function and houses for the field.
Common questions
Is a zodiac sign a whole personality?
No. The Sun sign is one placement. A chart also includes the Moon, planets, angles, houses and aspects.
Are opposite signs enemies?
No. Opposite signs form one axis and define each other through contrast.
Is a sign the same as a constellation?
Astrological signs are twelve equal 30-degree divisions of the zodiac used by the selected zodiac framework. Constellations are irregular astronomical star regions.
