Nodes, Lilith and Chiron

The lunar nodes and Lilith are calculated points, while Chiron is a small Solar System body. Astrology assigns them symbolic meanings, but they should not be interpreted as ordinary planets.

What these objects are

Object Astronomical or calculated basis
North Node One intersection of the Moon’s orbital plane with the ecliptic
South Node The opposite intersection, always 180° from the North Node
Lilith A calculated lunar-apogee point in the implementation used by the chart
Chiron A physical minor body with an orbit between the outer-planet regions

The nodes and Lilith do not have mass at the displayed zodiac degree. Chiron is a body, but it is not one of the classical or major modern planets. Their different nature is why they should not automatically receive all planetary attributes.

North and South Node as one axis

The nodes are mathematically opposite and are best read together. Modern astrology often associates the North Node with development toward less familiar territory and the South Node with established patterns or accumulated familiarity. This is a symbolic framework, not a judgment that one node is good and the other bad.

Astro Legacy calculates the South Node from the valid North Node position when necessary and can use either node as a natal or transiting target.

Chiron

Astrology commonly uses Chiron as a symbol for a sensitive area that can develop awareness, skill or a capacity to accompany others. Avoid reducing it to permanent damage. Its sign is generational; house and aspects make the placement more specific.

Astro Legacy requires a valid Chiron position. If the ephemeris result is unavailable, the app omits Chiron rather than inserting a false 0° position.

Lilith

“Lilith” can refer to several calculations in astrology. Astro Legacy displays the lunar-apogee point configured by its ephemeris path. Interpretations often concern autonomy, exclusion, refusal or material that resists social smoothing. The exact calculation should be named when comparing charts from different tools.

Reading them in a transit

Use the same structural order as for a planet-to-planet transit, but keep the object type explicit:

  • identify the moving object and natal target;
  • read the aspect and orb;
  • add houses and phase;
  • avoid inventing physical properties such as a retrograde natal chart angle;
  • compare the symbolic reading with the rest of the chart.

Common questions

Is the South Node calculated separately?

It is geometrically opposite the North Node. Astro Legacy can derive it from the valid northern position.

Are Lilith and Chiron planets?

No. Lilith is a calculated point in this context; Chiron is a minor body.

Why might Chiron be missing?

The application explicitly omits Chiron when a valid position cannot be calculated. It never replaces missing data with 0°.
