ASC, DESC, MC and IC — the chart angles

ASC–DESC and MC–IC are two opposing axes calculated from birth time and location. They anchor the house system and provide sensitive reference points for natal interpretation and transits.

Two axes, four points

Point Opposite point Basic orientation
ASC — Ascendant DESC — Descendant Self and approach ↔ encounter and relationship
MC — Midheaven IC — Imum Coeli Public direction and visibility ↔ roots and private foundation

The points are calculated intersections tied to the local horizon and meridian. They are not planets. Their positions can change noticeably within minutes, which is why accurate birth time matters.

Ascendant and Descendant

The Ascendant is the zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon. Astrologically it is associated with immediate orientation, embodiment and the way a person meets circumstances. The Descendant is the opposite degree and is associated with encounters, partnership and qualities recognized through other people.

Read them as one axis. Overemphasizing the ASC while ignoring the DESC removes the relational balance built into the geometry.

Midheaven and Imum Coeli

The MC marks the upper meridian reference used by the chart calculation. It is associated with visibility, direction and a role in the wider world. The opposite IC is associated with roots, private foundations and the conditions from which outward direction develops.

The MC is not always the tenth-house cusp in every house system. Astro Legacy keeps the calculated angle and the selected house structure explicit.

Transits to chart angles

Astro Legacy treats ASC, DESC, MC and IC as valid natal targets. A transit to an angle can be exact even though the target is not a physical body. Read the transiting planet, aspect and axis together.

For example, transiting Saturn crossing the MC concentrates Saturn’s symbolic themes around the MC side of the vertical axis. The interpretation still needs orb, phase, houses and the rest of the chart; it does not guarantee a career event.

Unknown or uncertain birth time

If the time is unknown, the angles are not dependable. Selecting noon prevents the calculation from failing but cannot reconstruct the missing horizon. Treat angle and house transits as approximate, and focus more on planet-to-planet relationships.

Common questions

Are ASC and rising sign the same?

The Ascendant is an exact degree. The rising sign is the sign containing that degree.

Is MC simply “career”?

Career can be one expression, but public direction, visibility, responsibility and wider contribution are broader themes.

Can an angle be retrograde?

No meaningful natal retrograde state applies to an angle. It remains a valid geometric target for transits.
