What the terms mean
| Status | Traditional idea |
|---|---|
| Domicile | The planet rules the sign and is considered able to use its resources directly |
| Exaltation | The planet receives a place of special elevation or support |
| Detriment | The sign opposes a domicile and requires the planet to work through unfamiliar conditions |
| Fall | The sign opposes exaltation and can make the exalted function harder to sustain |
| Peregrine | None of the four statuses above applies in this simplified essential-dignity layer |
These labels do not grade a whole person or guarantee a good or bad outcome. A planet in detriment can be central and constructive; a planet in domicile can be overused. Aspects, houses, sect and other techniques can modify a traditional judgment.
Traditional table for the seven classical planets
| Planet | Domicile | Exaltation | Detriment | Fall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | Aries | Aquarius | Libra |
| Moon | Cancer | Taurus | Capricorn | Scorpio |
| Mercury | Gemini, Virgo | Virgo | Sagittarius, Pisces | Pisces |
| Venus | Taurus, Libra | Pisces | Scorpio, Aries | Virgo |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio | Capricorn | Libra, Taurus | Cancer |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces | Cancer | Gemini, Virgo | Capricorn |
| Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius | Libra | Cancer, Leo | Aries |
Mercury has both domicile and exaltation in Virgo in the simplified traditional table. This is not a typo. Different historical techniques add bounds, triplicity and other dignity layers; Astro Legacy currently exposes the compact essential categories above.
Modern outer-planet associations
Uranus with Aquarius, Neptune with Pisces and Pluto with Scorpio are modern rulership associations. Astro Legacy labels them as modern domicile context and uses the opposite signs Leo, Virgo and Taurus as detriment context. It does not invent universally agreed exaltations or falls for these bodies.
This keeps the classical table clear while acknowledging a convention used by many modern astrologers. Schools that use only traditional rulers can ignore this outer-planet layer.
How dignity appears in Astro Legacy
The result can show a dignity label beside a planet. Domicile and exaltation modestly raise the product’s relative transit-intensity factor; detriment and fall reduce it. This score prioritizes rows inside Astro Legacy. It is not a universal measurement of astrological power and should not replace chart interpretation.
Combine dignity with the planet, sign, house, aspect and orb.
Common questions
Is detriment the same as fall?
No. Detriment opposes domicile. Fall opposes exaltation.
Is peregrine the same as weak?
Not necessarily. It only means that none of these simplified essential statuses applies.
Do all astrologers use outer-planet rulerships?
No. They are modern associations and are kept separate from the classical seven-planet table.
